I’m delighted that I was placed in the shortlist for the Northern Beaches Writers Competition 2024! This year’s theme was GLASS, and required a photo submission as well as the story itself (up to 2500 words). Not being a particularly skillful photographer, this element added an extra layer to the challenge, but I was really happy with the light and angles I achieved in the end.
My story, ‘I Am’, was connected to the theme through the deep eye-based conversations we often have with ourselves in the privacy of a bathroom mirror, and the properties of glass that make it both fragile and incredibly strong. I also explored themes of grief, how we construct our work identities, and that moment of life when adult children begin to need to parent their parents.
